Why Invest In Commercial Solar Panels?
Energy costs are still a real worry for businesses all across Northamptonshire. Investing in commercial solar systems technology lets your organisation generate its own electricity on-site, cutting down on your reliance on the grid & creating a more stable, long-term energy future for yourself.
Modern solar PV systems are a tried and tested way for organisations to lower their energy consumption, reduce their carbon footprint, and boost operational efficiency.
With solar technology getting better and better & energy prices still a bit volatile, businesses are now seeing solar as a strategic long-term investment to lower energy bills.
How Your Business Generates Power From The Sun
Commercial solar panels take daylight and turn it into usable electricity to power your business operations throughout the day. By generating electricity on-site, organisations can really cut down on their reliance on imported grid electricity and make some serious savings over the system’s lifetime.
Here’s what happens:
Commercial-grade solar panels are installed on your roof or land to capture daylight using photovoltaic technology, converting it into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts this into usable alternating current (AC) to power your premises.
The energy generated is used immediately on-site, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering electricity costs. Any surplus energy can be exported back to the grid or stored in battery systems for later use, maximising overall value.
Each system is carefully designed around your building structure, operational needs, and energy usage to ensure optimal performance and return on investment.

FAQs
The cost of commercial solar panels typically varies between £700 to £1,200 per kW installed – and can depend on a load of different factors including the size of the system, the type of roof and how tricky the installation is. A rough guide would be that a 50 kW system could cost anywhere from £40,000 to £60,000, and a 100kW system could cost between £70,000 to £95,000. Generally, the bigger the system, the better value for money you’ll get as you get economies of scale.
Installing solar panel energy systems usually takes a few days to a fortnight, depending on the size of the system and how tricky the site is. And of course, the whole process from start to finish – including all the surveys, designing the system and getting the grid to approve the installation – can take anything from 4-12 weeks.
Commercial solar can give a very good return on investment, with annual returns of 16% to 45% and payback periods usually between 3 to 8 years. It all depends on how much energy you use and how big the system is. Plus, you can keep generating savings for 25+ years after the initial installation.
Yes, there are loads of options available including:
- Asset finance or leasing
- Power Purchase Agreements with no upfront costs
- Tax incentives like Full Expensing or Capital Allowances
So you can spread the cost or install solar with minimal upfront investment.
Most commercial solar installations are allowed under permitted development so you won’t need to get planning permission. However, there are some exceptions like listed buildings, conservation areas or ground mounted systems which may need permission.
As a rough guide, you’ll need about 5-7 square meters of roof space per kilowatt installed. So for a 50 kW system, you’ll need about 250-350 square meters of usable roof space depending on just how efficient the panels are and how you lay them out.
Solar PV panels are very easy to take care of – just the occasional cleaning to get rid of any dirt or debris and an annual check on the system to make sure it’s working as efficiently as possible. Most systems come with a 20 to 25 year warranty and have very low ongoing costs.
Yes, you can. Using the Smart Export Guarantee you can sell any excess energy back to the grid and typically earn about 4-15p per kilowatt hour, which gives you an extra income stream.
Yes, they absolutely can be. Warehouses are ideal spots for solar panels thanks to their vast, open rooftops & the fact that they tend to run with the lights on during daylight hours. Solar systems in warehouses usually start at around 50kW, and they can be a really smart investment.
The answer is yes, they will. Okay, so they do function best in full sun, but the truth is they still do pretty well even on cloudy days. On a cloudy day, they’ll still manage around 10-25% of what they’d be able to do in full sun. As long as you’re getting some actual sunlight, they’ll be chugging away, generating electricity for you.
