    How It Works

    Why Choose Commercial Solar Panels?

Commercial solar panels make sense for businesses looking to cut down on operating costs, become more sustainable and get a better handle on their energy usage. By generating your own electricity on-site, you can shield your business from rising energy costs whilst showing you’re committed to being kinder to the environment. With reliable performance, low maintenance needs and attractive financial incentives, solar panels for businesses are a smart investment that pays off in the short and long term.

    How Solar Works

How Your Business Generates Power From The Sun

Commercial solar panels are a simple and efficient way for businesses to generate their own electricity on-site. By capturing energy from daylight and turning it into usable power, your business can reduce its dependence on the grid and lower ongoing energy costs. The whole process is seamless, with systems designed around your premises, your energy usage, and the space you have available to maximise performance and savings.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Solar panels soak up daylight – Our panels that are installed on your roof or land soak up sunlight using clever semiconductor materials
    • The energy gets turned into electricity – Through a process called the photovoltaic effect, sunlight gets converted into a direct current (DC)
    • An inverter makes it usable – The system converts DC into alternating current (AC), which powers your business systems
    • Your business uses the energy straight away – The generated electricity gets used across your site, reducing your reliance on the national grid
    • Any excess energy is handled efficiently – Surplus power can be sent back out to the grid or stored (with battery systems) for later use

We design the overall solar PV system with your business in mind, taking into account your energy demand, building structure, and local conditions to ensure it performs at its best and gets you a return on investment.

The Key Benefits of Solar Panels For Your Business

    Testimonial Matalan

The LED lighting upgrade across our estate was a huge success, financially, operationally, and helped us reduce our carbon footprint contributing to our sustainability goals. The planning was meticulous from both Airis and Matalan to ensure there were no disruption to our store colleagues or a reduced shopping experience for our customers. The collaboration between Airis and the Matalan FM team was truly remarkable to upgrade 127 stores within a nine-month time frame with no technical issues or complaints just shows how hard the teams worked together.

Following several recommendations, we engaged with Airis to deliver a solar project here at Fairhaven Golf Club. As an organisation, we prioritise sustainability throughout our working practices and to partner with a company that shared these values was most beneficial to the process. The project will see our annual grid consumption reduce by over 12% resulting in around 21,000 kWh of energy each year being generated. During the planning stages, we encountered several issues which the team at Airis helped to resolve. Their understanding, flexibility and practice applications made the whole process seamless. We could not recommend Airis more highly.

Testimonial Hambleton Primary Academy, Over Wyre

We sourced Airis Energy Solutions alongside the Green Business Fund / Carbon Trust to install a full school LED Smart Lighting system. All our lighting was extremely outdated and was failing more frequently, at a significant cost each time. There is no capital outlay and the installation of new lights was a very efficient process, with all the old lighting being taken off-site afterwards. It has significantly improved the appearance around school, has reduced our maintenance costs to zero, reduced our CO2 emissions and will reduce our energy consumption over time.

From start to finish Dave and his colleagues were fantastic to deal with. Very straight forward and completely transparent about the service. We are extremely pleased with the outcome and would happily recommend Airis to anyone who is interested. We had no disruption to our very busy factory and the fitters could not do enough. All in all, an excellent job!

    Testimonial McDonald's

As a business owner, I’m always trying to save money. It wasn’t until I worked with Airis Energy Solutions that I realised just how much money I was needlessly spending on energy. Thank-you.

I would be more than happy to recommend the Airis scheme and service. We have had all our lighting replaced with the Airis scheme, with this we have had no outlay or cost to ourselves. We are delighted with the results and would therefore recommend Airis to other businesses like ourselves.

      Commercial Solar Installations

      FAQs

The cost of commercial solar panels normally varies from £700 to £1,200 per kW installed and can depend on system size, roof type and how tricky the installation is. A rough guide to the cost is that a 50 kW system could cost anywhere from £40,000 to £60,000, while a 100kW system is likely to cost £70,000 to £95,000. Normally the bigger the system the better value for money you’ll get as there are economies of scale to consider.

Installing a commercial solar system usually takes a few days to a week or two, depending on how big the system is and how tricky the site is. However, the whole process from start to finish including all the surveys, design work and getting the grid to approve the installation can take something like 4–12 weeks.

Commercial solar can offer a very good return on investment, with annual returns of 16% to 45% and payback periods usually between 3 to 8 years. It all depends on how much energy you use and how big the system is. Plus, you can keep generating savings for 25+ years after the initial installation.

Yes, you can get a number of different options including:

      ● Asset finance or leasing
      ● Power Purchase Agreements that don’t require you to pay a penny upfront
      ● Tax incentives like Full Expensing or Capital Allowances

That way you can spread the cost or install solar with very minimal upfront investment.

Most commercial solar installations are allowed under permitted development so you won’t need to get planning permission. However, there are some exceptions like listed buildings, conservation areas or ground mounted systems which may need permission.

As a rough guide you’ll need about 5–7 square meters of roof space per kilowatt installed. So for example, a 50 kW system will need around 250–350 square meters of usable roof space depending on how efficient the panels are and how you lay them out.

Solar PV panels are very easy to look after, you’ll just need to do the occasional cleaning to get rid of any dirt or debris and also do an annual check on the system to make sure it’s working as efficiently as possible. Most systems come with a warranty of 20–25 years and have very low ongoing costs.

Yes, you can. Using the Smart Export Guarantee you can sell any excess energy back to the grid and typically earn about 4p-15p per kilowatt hour, which gives you an extra income stream.

Yes, they are. Warehouses are a great place for solar installations as they often have big, open roof spaces and high energy usage during the day. Systems in warehouses usually range from 50 kW upwards and are very cost effective.

Yes, it will. Solar panels work just fine even though they are more effective in full sun. Even on cloudy days they can still produce 10–25% of their peak output. So as long as you are getting some daylight, they will be generating electricity for you.
